I'm sure this topic gets beat to death around here, but I searched for it and couldn't find what I was looking for, so I'm just gonna ask.
I have a '76 F150. 390 engine, c6 tranny, extented cab, 8 foot bed, 2x4. My dad bought the truck new, so we've had the truck for a while. He gave me the truck last week. I'll keep the truck forever- it's got a LOT of sentimental value to me.
If I wanted to add four wheel drive- what all do I need? What other years F150s are compatible with my truck? I just wanna find a parts truck on Craigslist or wherever. For example- would a 93 F150 with a 302 and auto tranny work with my truck? Or do I have to find an old school 73-79 truck?
My friend and his dad are mechanical geniuses and have their own shop that I have access to.
I know almost nothing, but smart people around here say pretty much the same thing each time this question is asked.
They say: it's much easier to start with a '73-'79 rolling 4x4 frame and go from there. While it is possible with much fabrication and skill to adapt a 4x2 frame to 4x4 is is WAY easier and cheaper to just get a solid 4x4 frame.
find a truck the same as yours with a toasted body. throw the body away. put your body on the 4wd frame. easiest way by far and should only take a few days
