High milage?

Hi there,

I am looking into buying a diesel for towing my 11000lb camper. After reading the diesel forums it seems the 7.3 is the better, more reliable motor.

I found a couple that have what I think is high mileage. One is a 2001 with 250000 miles and the other is a 2000 with 140000 miles.

Is this alot of miles? What is the expected lifespan of a diesel? What can I expect for MPG (towing, not towing)? Other issues I should be aware of?

Thank you.

many guy's are well over 300k a few are over 500k miles..it all depends if the PO took care of it and how you take care of it..if everything on the truck checks out with the first post in this link..your off to a good start..I get 18 MPG around town.( my girlfriend gets 20 with it) I get 21 on the big road..I pulled my brothers 15kGVW 5er with my 60 tow tune and got 13MPG...this was before mod's in my sig..i havnt pulled a trailer or took a trip just yet with these mods..i will be in a couple weeks..hope to get better MPG..

I've been inside a 7.3 with 150,000 miles and it still had cross-hatch patterns on the cylinder walls like Ron said if their taken care of they will last a long time. My first one was a 96 F250 I bought with 140,000 sold it to friend at 245,000 he pulls a big ole 5th wheel with it and is pushing 280,000 with no problems except a tranny. My dually has 160,000 on it and I consider it to just now being broke in. Beside the the engine handling the miles the trucks themselves do very well with the high miles.

Of the two, I would go with the 2000 model, not because of miles, but because of the transmission, if automatic. The 4R100 in '01 had a "mechanical diode" that is considered to be a "weak link" in that year model. Earlier, and later, than 2000 do not have this "diode".

I've got 286k on mine with no troubles. There is a guy on here with a recent thread about some problems with his high mileage motor. Looks like he's going to have to at least pull the top end apart and do some work. That doesn't seem too bad since he has 804k on it though.

If the automatic in the ''01 has been replaced or overhauled, the diode will have been removed. It would then not be an issue. Don't give up on an '01 before checking that out.

I have an '01 with a diode that has never been repaired or changed. My truck has 270,000 miles on it. I think it is a matter of not abusing the tranny and mostly luck that makes a diode last.

I will probably be hitting 303K this week and just had a ton of work done, mostly preventative, except for the rusted oil pan. Make sure the oil pan is not rusted and has had the rust treatment put on it, which was a Ford technical bulletin. You have to pull the engine to replace the pan. While mine was out, I had a lot of things checked and cleaned and the mechanic said he couldn't put a life expectancy on it because it still looked clean.

I just bought my 03' 7.3 in September with 148k on it and in the 5k i put on it i havent had any real extreme or expensive issues with it, mainly wear and tear. But it was a work truck that towed 7k daily. i get round 15 in town and 16-17 on the highway.

I have 187k on mine and it runs like a champ, and besides the transmission going out this week, i haven't had any major issues. And this truck got worked, i towed ALL the time in texas heat and all i have done is the general maintenance.

I think the fuel mileage depends on where you live and your driving habits. I live in the mountains, and driving up and down the hills in the winter start and stop all the time I get 12mpg empty with my 2wd reg cab. Now same truck on the interstate which is mostly flat I get 22mpg at 65. The good news is it doesn't matter what's in the bed or hooked to the hitch the mileage is about the same.

Thank you all. It seems high mileage is less important an issue for the motor than on gas models. When I find the right truck I'll post some pics and let you know how I like it.

Thanks again.
