i have been looking for a zf trans for my truck so i can drop my 351 into my 95 and actually have the tranny hold up to the 351. i have been told that the mazda trans, that i have now, cant handle hte power very good and to find a zf. but i cant. i cant find a 351 with a 5 speed what so ever(i need to switch the bottom end of my motor for manual trans) are the zf trans pretty common? what years should i look and is it just f250 and f350 gas or is it in the 1/2 tons too? any help would be awesome. thanks
F250/350/450 '87 to present, 300, 302, 351w. Not many 302s in that group, but some say they were available, beats me. There was a change in the trans starting in '95, and it may not have a speedo drive if it's newer. A diminishing percentage of trucks had MT as the years go by, so you'll just have to keep looking.
You know not to buy 460 or diesel model of course...

Not sure what you have in your neck of the woods. But in Denver, CO I just called the local Ford Truck Parts yard (not a dealership) and he had a few just sitting around. He had a ZF-5 for the small block ford in rebuilt and un-rebuilt price ranges. I had my pick (I bought a rebuilt unit for $1100 4 years ago). A non-rebuilt unit with 60K on it for $600 is reasonable.
You shouldn't have any problem at all finding one, they were used extensively, and should be easy to come by. Something tells me you just haven't turned over all the rocks yet.
i guess im trying to be to cheap in finding a trans. i was hoping 200-300 for a decent one seeins as i can get my c6 rebuilt for 300
OD transmissions are a premium, even if they are 10 years old. Just getting a low miles trans would cost you ~$600, a rebuilt one is EASILY $1100 if not more by now.
The most in-expensive way for you to do it would be to find someone parting out a F250-F350 on craigslist and just go pull it yourself. The salvage yards know how much a ZF is worth and won't let your wring it from their hands for anything less than a $600.
As the saying goes........"You get what you pay for".
I did a search in my area and found this one. I am unsure of your location but judging from the snow in your picture nowhere around here. 1987 Ford ZF 5 Speed
ya thats a bit far for me. but i am going down to FL in june. doubt i would be able to sneak it into the taurus without my gf seeing it though... but thats exaclty what im looking for.
If you are not in a hurry to find a tranny keep looking and you might find a better deal. I saw a ZF with transfer case on ebay earlier tonight out of a F 450 460cid truck that had a starting bid of $250. The auction had about 20 hrs. left and no one had bid on it. Believe it was somewhere in Wisconsin. I just missed an F250 4x4 with zf 300 I6 for $500so there are some better deals out there if you have the time and patience.
I've bought 2 ZFs on fleabay both for under $300 each and both worked fine. The only ZF that will fit is one that was in a truck with a 300 or 351w. I don't think they put them behind 302s but it would fit. I put them both in F150s with 300s. The mazda tranny is junk and certainly won't hold up well to a 351.
