Your axle code shows you have the light duty rear axle...1723 lb. capacity (the heavy duty axle is . I would double check with your local Ford dealer but I think your maximum trailer weight would be 3,500 lbs. according to the charts. If your truck does not have the super cooling and handling package your definetly factory rated at 3,500 lb. maximum trailer weight.
As far as headers/gearing goes...either one will help. You will notice the biggest difference with the gear change. If you job the work out, headers with dual exhaust or a rear axle gearing change will cost you around $600 each. If you have a 4X4 figure on $1,200 to change out both gear sets.
You asked "is it worth it" to make these modifications? That all depends on what YOU can live with...how fast do you really want to climb the hills? Is it worth $600 to YOU to be able do 50 MPH instead of 40 MPH when going through the mountains? If you go from 3:55's to 4:10's is it worth the extra exceleration to lose
1-2 MPG? I tow 8,000-9,000 lbs with a F250 460 auto...It was worth it to ME to add headers, dual exhaust, K&N air filter, and RV cam to keep ahead of the "pack" when going through the mountains (60-62 MPH), the only time "they" can get around me is only on the steepest grades (50 MPH @ 5,000 ft. elevation). I do have a used set of 4:10's laying around that I have NOT put in because 99% of the time my "combo" is adequate and I don't want to lose any more MPG...I currently get 7.5 MPG when towing, 11.5 empty.
