I am in the Portland, OR area and I am looking at a 69 F100 4X4 with a 302 and a 4 speed. my question is if I get it I would want to lift it a little and probably run 35's BUT it doesn't have a 2 speed transfer case (no 4LO) I was wondering if I could get a 2speed transfer case (with 4LO) and put it in for a reasonable price I can do all the work myself. I just don't want to have to mess with making drive lines shorter or longer because I can't do that. so is there a 2 speed transfer case that would pretty much just bolt on? if so how much around about would one run new or used? I know this is a long post and I appreciate your help
Ford started using an NP205 case when the F150 was introduced in I think 76. There isn't a direct bolt in but a trans and t-case from a 76 - 79 F150 or mid 77 - 79 F250 can be made to work. You would definitely need to have to get the rear shaft shortened.
Hi Tim,
the 1/2 ton model 4x4's in those years did have what is called a in & out transfer case(no low). but the 3/4 ton models did have a high low transfer case, there is a bit of difference in size so if you find a 3/4 ton 4x4 of the same vintage (67-72) maybe even early mid 70's? in a junk yard you might get the transfer case & all the additional items you need for 1 price.
hope this helps, Jess
As above, you can find a 3/4 ton truck with the hi/low transfer case. But the transmission that you have the transfer case is bolted to the transmission and the 3/4 ton is not bolted to the transmission, so if you want to go that way, you will need the transmission, tranfer case and the drive lines to go with it. It would be easier to find a 3/4 ton truck.
