bumper towing weight
I have a 1977 Ford F250, and I need to put on a new bumper. I went down to my local junkyard and found about three F-seris trucks, all of the trucks looked to be late to mid 80's. What was the towing capibilities on these bumpers, they look like a pretty think gauge. Thanks in advance. Joe

Buy a good receiver hitch and forget about towing with your bumper, unless you only tow a golf cart. I know a lot of people tow with their bumpers. I used to, until recently, when I was going over my insurance policy. If I had an accident while towing my pontoon (2,700lbs) or my travel trailer (6,000lbs) with the rear bumper, my policy is voided. So I bought and installed a Reese class 3 receiver.

He is right don't use your bumper to hual or your going to end up back at the junk yard looking for another bumper. Get a hitch they don't cost too much and they don't break if you fallow there weight capibiltys. the max weight for a bumper is 2,600 pounds max trailer weight.

For light hauling(3500 lbs. & under) a bumper hitch is fine as long as you are within the rating stamped on the bumper.Anyone telling you different is second guessing a multi-billion dollar industry's liability lawyers. If you get a used bumper, make sure it is in good condition, rated for your use, and mount it with proper grade/size fasteners. If it doesn't have a rating stamped on it, don't use it, there is junk out there, or it may have had a foil sticker, but if you don't know what it's good for, what good is it?
