I tried to search for the answer but got tired of searching through other info.
My brother called today and said his truck runs fine except sometimes when he takes off. He said when he gives it fuel to leave a stop sign, it will just turn off. He can crank it back up and works fine. Driving down the interstate is no problem, only when leaving from a stop.
I'm not that familiar with diesel engines so I'm not sure what to look for on this one.
He called again this morning with an update. It's died on him a few times when he lets off the gas. He pulled into a parking lot and was idling through the lot and it shut down.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the TPS - Throttle Position Sensor. Have him try depressing the throttle slowly as he takes off and see if it makes a difference as compared to hitting it quickly. Worth a try.
He changed the fuel filter with last oil change, oil is good, CPS was replaced just after he purchased the truck.
It died while driving down the road today at approximately 30mph.

Is the new CPS from Ford or Intl. Auto store CPS's have a high failure rate. Even a new Ford CPS has been known to go bad quickly. If he has a spare CPS he should put it in.

He purchased the truck used a few years ago. The CPS went out at 20k miles and the dealership covered it under warranty. He's got close to 180k miles now.
Have him change the CPS. It is a cheap easy test. Is he getting an SES light at all? If so there will be codes and maybe somone is near him that has an AE and can pull the codes for him.
Also a Superchips programmer will pull codes if somebody has one of them, thats what I use. I would bet Throttle positioning sensor but the CPS's have those kwirks too. Like the guys said above, CPS changeout first.
