Automatic vs bolt action

Think i am ready to pull the trigger on a newsed f250.

1= 1999 250 psd Auto

2= 2000 250 psd w/ 6 speed (bolt action)

I don't remember to fondly of the e40d,
not alot of experience w/ later one,(can't recall the model no#,4r100?) for the autos. Not even sure which one this year would have?

Other than the pos dual mass flywheel, any issues w/ the 6 spd.?

Thinking of doing a few "moderate" power mods.

Any advantage of one to the other?

Both would hold up equally ?

For "moderate" power mods either the 4R100 or the handshaker would be a good choice. I'm kind of spoiled by having owned autos for about 7 years now. I will say this- if you do a lot of driving in town the handshaker gets cumbersome for me... lots of rowing to do. Out on the road they are fine. As you pointed out, both have their weak points but can be addressed- VB or shift kit and a decent TC for the auto, or a good clutch for the stick. Either way cost is probably nearly the same. I'd go for whichever is the best truck you can get the best deal on.

I love my 6 speed ,put a good clutch in there rock and roll . I think a truck should have a handshaker in it but I realize there are plenty of good reasons to have an auto. The only down side is in a dragrace from a dead stop you can't build boost ( like you can with an auto ) . The NBS trucks don't have dual mass flywheels anymore.

Not sure, why? what should I look for?

Here's the auto,I'm sure the price is negotiable.( a little)but still seems a little strong.

1999 Used Ford F-250 Super Duty XLT at Warrenton Select, VA, IID 3970255

And the bolt action ,already talked about $ 7300,any thoughts?
The auto vs. manual, not really an issue to me.I don't mind shifting at all.

I was thinking about the difference in price to spend on mods?

Its a late 99... Foil on the hot side IC, taller oil filler tube, air filter set up...

You want a late 99 if your getting a 99...

x2. I kind of like the bolt action myself, but the pics aren't as nice. The 99 would be a great rig- miles are good, looks to be in great shape. Price is too high IMO. See what they'll do on price and go from there.

More options for turbo upgrades, bigger HPOP, bigger injectors, easier to get chassis parts.

I kinda like stick over the autos also, but the wife can't drive it.
(really not a huge deal)

(NOT SURE IF THATS GOOD OR BAD)

I agree the asking price is a little steep but in this area - zip 22724 the nada is around 10 +. FWIW

I'm sure I can get some more off, just was curious about the pro / cons between the years and drive line.

I gotta do something soon !

Almost nothing is selling for book value right now, so don't lean on that too heavily. Here's a comprehensive list of the early/late differences:

Early 99 has a wicked wheel in it from the factory.

The early99 has 120cc(AB code) injectors and the late99-03 has 140cc(AD code) injectors.

The early99 has 2" intake runners. The late99-03 has 3" intake runners.

The early99 has a 15* swash plate HPOP. The late99-03 has a 17* swash plate HPOP.

The early99 has one glow plug relay. The late99-03 has one glow plug relay and one air intake heater relay side by side. Both relays are on the passenger side valve cover toward the front of the truck.

The early99 has a totally different air filter that is not inter changeable with the late99-03. But you can put the late99 air cleaner assembly in the early99 truck. The only two aftermarket air filters that work on the early99 are the AFE stage 2 and the AIS.

The early99 track rod has smaller mounting bolts than the late99-03.

The early99 has shallower rotors than the late99-03.

The early99 has shorter hub-bearings than the late99-03.

The early99 front axle U bolts are square where they go over the spring pack. The late99 U bolts are round.

The early99 has a different pitman arm than the late99-03.

The early99 does not have the AIH like the late99-03.

The early99 does not have the automatic transmission fluid cooler in the radiator.

The early99 has no indicator light showing that "cruise" is on. Late99-03 has a cruise light that will come on when you set the cruise control. The early99 truck has the light in the dash already. A newer PCM(Yes it will plug in and will run better too) must be used to make the cruise light illuminate. It is a green light on the right side edge, half way up.

Either is a good truck, but the late models are a better starting point. Early birds require more $$$ to do the same stuff as the later models.

my $.02:

if you wanna race it, go auto and get it built properly by the good builders recommended here.

If you are going to tow really big heavy stuff or require better mileage, get the stick. you can't shift fast enough unless you launch in 3rd or 4th, which seems to be pointless.

other than that, any 7.3 will suit you well.

Thanks for that !

Seems like a quick 2 min.visual to determine which one.

You mentioned the ww,aih, as differences ,don't most change to the ww, and delete the aih?

Wouldn't a non radiator trans cooler be better?

also , did ford make a f250 non super duty in 99 ?
