Besides, I love my 92. I spent a whole weekend digging it out of a mud hole. That grows one heck of a bond. The 78/79's are just too heavy and not enough wheel travel

...Well i don't know what year GM 12 bolt your looking at , but the ones i had don't have c clips & the bearing is pressed on to the axle....Lew

Sorry Lew, then it's not one of the GM axles commonly called a 10 bolt or 12 bolt, likely you were looking at a dana 44.

The 12 bolt GM i had came out of a 70 chey impala & was narrowed to fit a 72 chevy vega . Use impala brakes , the spool & gears that when in were for a 12 bolt chevy , the newer rears may be different ??? Lew

Yes I have seen them go at the bearings like you said with a nice groove. I have yet to see the C-clip end go but hear about it all the time. The 8.8 from Currie Ent. sounds like a good idea but would it hold up to desert racing? I'm not afraid to lay down the chainge to do something like that but won't if it breaks after the 3rd or 4th big jump. That's why I like the 9" because I know it will handle the abuse of off road racing. And you can still get floating axles for them.
Considering Currie is the leading builder of custom Ford 9" for all kinds of applications I'd say it'll hold up to just about anything. But the same can be said for the 8.8. I'm getting ready to rebuild my 8.8 next weekend and put Yukon axles in it along with a True-Trac and 4.56 gears for my 1990 F-150. I know the rear in this truck has been used and abused, so we'll see what the bearings and axles look like in it. As far as C-clip failure, I've heard it can happen, but I don't know a sole who has actually had it happen. If they were such bad axles, then why did Ford use them for so long in so many applications without changing or making any real upgrades to them??

I will, I'm going to be documenting the entire re-build for a tech artical I'm going to be submitting to "True Blue Trucks" Magazine. I'm hoping to help out all those other guys out there who have lifted or high performance Ford Trucks with 8.8 rears realize that they can keep the rear end they've got, and not have to go through swapping out just to get a stronger one.

I've had two C-clip failures, one in a 8.8 and one in a 12 bolt.

My only concern is the point where the tubes meet the center section. I looked at the Currie site and saw the housings. So that solves the width issue. I'm looking for a housing that is 6" wider than stock to match the front. The 9" can be welded with back braces and such. Is there a special proceedure to weld the tubes on the 8.8?
