rotated my tires last week and found out my passenger side upper ball joint is bad so i ordered new moogs for both sides plus energy suspension sway and track bar bushing kits. should i buy new seals for the axle too or can i just be easy with taking the old ones out? i only have 63,000 on my truck and i baby it most the time i guess good old new jersey crap roads finally got the best of my front end.
cant speak for your jersey roads but it seems the factory ball joints dont go much more than 60k did mine at 62k did the moog greasable and life is better now didnt do my axel seals no prob yet in 18 months
must make goooooood money.. i paid 1000 for 4 ball joints ....and my dad gives me 10% over cost for being shop manager at firestone and i dont make that in a paycheck...lol
i dont think you will need axle seals with those miles, your not going to like it when i say this but i did my ball joints for the first time last year on mu 2000 F.250 4x4, 143,000 on the clock, i dont got the best roads but i must have had a good set of ball joints from the factory, knock on wood but i only had to replace one hub bearing about 20,000 miles ago, its got 150,000 on it now, knock on wood, this is probably the best truck ive ever owned as far as having to replace things, and I have no plans on replacing it
Funny, I am also in Jersey, I just did my 04 with 58,000. I changed out all seals, the axel dust seals were both broken and I think it is foolish to go through all that work and then have to go through it a again in a few months because a seal failed.
I would at the least change all the orings and I also did change the hub seals. One came out alright and the other did not. I planned on changing everything when I was into it. I had recently developed a loud squeak when in 4x4 only, it sounded like a bad u joint, but I now believe that it was the hub seal as the noise in gone after I completed this work.
i just put a set of mile markers on in november when got stuck going duck hunting cuz the stupid nipple in the hub was corroded shut. so new dust seals of course and hub seals should be ok if im easy on them huh
one more thing how much do the dust seals and hub seals cost? my auto guy told me $60 for the dust seals but i dont think he knew what i was talking about today
There is the dust seals and then there is also the vacuum seal o rings on each side of the hub if you have the vacuum hubs. Might as well do these at the same time you got it all apart.
