Can I tow this?

Howdy ya'll. Well, my fiancee's dad just bought this 1987 F-150 super cab long bed. It has the 5.0L and automatic, I'm assuming it's a C-6. Anyway, my fiancee shows horses, and right now they have a 2 horse dual axle POS trailer. They've been towing it with their Jimmy, which is stupid in my oppinion and am amazed they didn't kill themselves. That's why they bought the F-150. It shrugs off the trailer, but now they want to get a 3 horse slant trailer. Will the F-150 still handle the trailer okay? I'm a Mustang driver by day, and when I take out my horses it's in my parents gooseneck towed by a 2000 F-250 super duty with the Powerstroke engine, which shrugs off that trailer going up hill at 70 mph.
Back to the F-150, what mods will be needed to help out the little F-150? Added leafs, bigger breaks... a bigger truck? I'm used to trying to improve 1/4 mile times, not tow more weight, so any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Ben

Start with these four things1) make sure there is an aux trans cooler, (2) verify the transmission as C-6 or AOD, (3) see what axle ratio is in the truck, and (4) estimate the weight of the loaded trailer. Then report back.

In addition to the four things ranger pat listed, add:

5) GVWR, placarded on the driver's side doorsill.
6) GCWR, listed in owner's manual.

I have been hauling horse for about 35 years, and one thing I found out is, the Fl50 is not really safe in pulling horses,no matter what you do to the truck, its to light. For a two horse trailer go to a F250 you would be amazed at the difference. For safety in pulling a three horse or four horse slant go to a F350 anything over four horse go to F450. I also found that the dually is much more stable and gives the horses a much better ride. I have now downsized and pulling a two horse slant gooseneck with a 01 powerstroke, love the truck. For horses comfort try going with the dually and gooseneck.
