I am soon to be moving from Louisiana to Idaho. I know the 351M c-6 in my 1979 F150 Supercab will do just fine in those mountains, But will the brakes hold up to a 27' Dutchman 5th wheel? Thanks.
The trailer has it's own brakes which are rated for more than the GVWR of the trailer. This is federal law I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong. I would be more concerned about the brakes on the truck, with a 27' 5er, the pin weight may place you very near or over your GVWR for that truck. I don't know the numbers off hand, but I would look on the door sticker and see what the GVWR is. You then need to add the loaded weight (full tank of gas, people, generator, firewood, ets.) of the truck to the pin weight of the trailer, you can figure 20% of your trailers loaded weight will be your pin weight, and make sure you are not over your trucks GVWR. You then need to look up in your truck's maual what the GCWR is for it. Now take your trucks loaded weight and your trailer's loaded weight and add them together to be sure your not over the GCWR for your truck. Hope this helps. It's always better to have more truck than just enough or over weight. Just my $0.02
Yes, your brakes will burn. When dropping down steep grades, slow your speed way down and drop to a lower gear and then watch for brake fade. If you notice any fading, your already in trouble and should use the last of your braking to stop and let them cool off.
I agree with Rich that your 150 is probably a little small for the task. If you decide to make the trip, avoid I-70 in Colorado from Denver to Vail, there are three major downgrades that eat a lot of RV's.
thanks for the replys, now i am sure i need at least a 3/4 ton. it will be a tough decision to get rid of this and get another as i have put my heart into it for the past four years. I thought about swapping axles. i got a friend inLouisiana that has some. i think they would swap right out. if anyones done this before let me know. jesse
