EEC-IV Parts

I know a lot of people are looking to get rid of the whole set up, but I'm sticking with it for now, as long as I'm subject to Colorado "enhanced" emissions.

Did some testing and troubleshooting on two parts that have been in question, the EGR on/off solenoid and the mix control solenoid. Hooked up a test light on each of these separately and got to driving with somebody watching for flashing . . . both "work" in that sense, but on the mix control solenoid, I have no good way of seeing if the internals are doing what they should. Anybody take one off of their truck and still have it floating around?

I think I am getting close enough to feel comfortable going back for an emissions retest. EGR valve has been replaced and I know the solenoid is doing what it should and that there's vacuum to the valve. Fixed a giant vacuum leak in the form of an empty/uncapped barb on the vacuum tree. Seems like the truck is starting to run right. The MC solenoid seems to be the big question mark now.

The Feedback solenoid (MC) responds to the O2 sensor. I would replace the O2 sensor and retest, if you pass it works. My carb guy says he tested mine at rebuild by putting voltage to it to see that the pintle was moving. Don't know if you can test this without removing the carb. Some carburetor shops have a dyno and can run the truck on it with a smog sniffer to fine tune air fuel. Also the 2 barrel EEC-IV carbs have a two stage power valve that is very fragile and can have a small tear that will ruin the smog test with HC.

The O2 sensor was one of the first bits to be replaced since it was the original and I figured it was just about the top of the food chain when it comes to the sensors and the computer. The throttle position sensor was changed after that since that was one of the codes that came up.

If emissions fail again, there are a couple possible culprits. The carb (Carter YFA 1BBL) could have been rebuilt improperly . . . with the ball bearing I found in the EGR vacuum line who knows what was done prior . . . the catalytic converter could be spent, or the MC solenoid. All this is assuming that the computer works like it is supposed to.

I'll update after emissions testing today, but again if anybody has taken the emissions bits off their trucks, I'll willingly volunteer to take them off your hands!

Emissions passed without a problem so I'll assume the MC solenoid is doing what it is supposed to. Now that the truck can be driven legally, I'll start tracking mileage for kicks.

Thanks for all of the info, great forum!

Thumbs up Welcome to FTE

Good to hear you passed. I rebuilt my carb and replaced the O2 sensor on my 300, passed with ease as well. What year is your truck? Maryland has Historic tags for vehicles 20 years and older; no more emission tests and cheap to boot.

It is a 1985 so I think I have everything the feedback carb and EEC-IV system have to offer!

I don't much care about it now, but eventually I'll have to take a look at what the requirements will be for my truck in two years when emissions testing will be due.
