i need to know where the lights wiring harness is behind the bumper so i can wire a adapter up for a trailer wiring plug. I looked behind the bumper in between the rear fuel tank and cant find nothin that looks like a plug where i could disconnect it and plug in the adapter then connect it all together. I bought the kit from autozone and it says to do this.
rndm, don't know what year truck you have. Yes the newer trucks are prewired for trailers and even brake controllers. But on older trucks like my '81, you'll have to trace down the wires and splice into them.
You should run a new separate wire from your brake controller to the new plug for the trailer brakes.
Trailer ground wire should be grounded to the negative post on the truck battery or the frame through the plug and not through the hitch. The stoplights/marker lights/turn signals can be spliced into at the back of the truck.
All of the major hitch mfgrs also make plug-in wiring adaptors for trailers. Just go to a hitch retailer and look up your vehicle. The adapter kit will allow you to plug into your vehicles wiring system without splicing. This is definitely the way to go in my opinion. Directions will be included with the kit.
