I just got a 1993 Ranger with a 2.3 5-Speed. I put about 700 miles on it and now it is gringing when I try to put it in reverse. It is full of fluid and the clutch master is full. It shifts fine in all the other gears. Any clue as to what it could be? Thanks
That is a sign of the clutch dragging. If it is just a crunch when you shift into reverse I would not worry. If it is a prolonged grinding then it would need look ed at further.
Give more info. How much free play in clutch pedal? Any signs of fluid around the slave cylinder at the transmission? Any signs of fluid around the master cylinder where it bolts to the firewall? Can you see any wear where the pedal is hinged?
Every MT I've ever driven did this. The input shaft turns some regardless, and unless reverse is synchro, it's going to grind. I always put it in 4th or 3rd first, then reverse. Once it's in a gear, everything stops, and those gears are synchro so no grinding. But, if, like the previous post says, it really grinds a lot and especially if engageing the other gears is difficult and it grinds after you do the little trick above, you have some mechanical issue as listed above.
