Anyone ever pulled out the auto trans and installed a manual?
Pretty much all I use this truck for is pulling trailers. If I'm commuting or running errands I have another vehicle I drive.
I love the truck, everything but this automatic transmission.
I'm kind of old school. I drove a big truck OTR for many years. I'm used to diesels and manual transmissions. This automatic wants to think for me. But I don't like the decisions it's making...
So what would be better? Swap transmissions or sell this one and buy one that already has a clutch?
Finding a truck with a stick will be difficult. I understand where you're coming from. I don't like how the auto's drive either. I will say, if I was stuck with an auto, getting a good tuner can make it almost bearable. My wife has a TW chip in her truck and one of the settings keeps the converter locked longer and even allows the truck to downshift when slowing down, which I didn't know you could do with an auto. Still not the same control as my stick, but almost bearable.
Talked to a qualified mech about this years ago when i wanted to do the same to my old 97 , and he said cheaper to buy a truck that came from ford with a stick than change over from the e4od to the zf5. the pcm has to be changed is what i was told, the computers are different from auto's to manuals(just what i was told) my truck was a 97 built in aug and my buddies was a stick and also was a 97 built in aug and the codes on the pcm were different.
