Hello. I have a 1996 ford f150. The engine is a 4.9l inline 6. The issue I am having is with starting. If its been about four hours before its been started, the engine will crank longer than normal. Not only crank, but it sounds as if it isnt getting fuel. It really stumps me. I would really like to get it fixed. I think its a fuel problem, whereas my freind think it is a coil/electrical problem. So what can I do?
It does sound like a fuel problem, since it does start. You could check to see if you are getting spark through the spark plug wires(final destination) and then you would know for sure. Here's what I would try: the next time it has been sitting four hours or more, turn the ignition switch on and wait a couple seconds until the fuel pump stops and turn the switch off and back on for another couple seconds, repeat this about a dozen times, this should partially recharge the fuel system. Then see if it starts better.

I did the key thing, and it works. What does that mean.
Fuel filter, injector cleaner/fuel treatment. Unhook the intake hoses off the intake, spray all around inside the butterfly/housing with carb cleaner. (Hold butterfly's open and clean the dark deposits.) Try this, and let us know.
