I just got around to doing the self test, did it four times, and this is what I came up with. 33/13/32/45/23/32/45... I didn't get any three number codes, and some codes repeated but not all. I'm still wondering if I did this right. I also ended up with a 2 left over on the end... not sure what's the deal. I looked up all these codes and read what they mean, was I supposed to be running the engine for part of this test? the reason I did this is because my trans slipped out of overdrive and into neutral on the way to work this morning, anything over fifty mph would go right to neutral. on the surface streets it seemed fine. I drove forty five min home on surface streets with no noticeable problem... I could really use some advice here. checked the fluid today and it smells a little burnt, could the trans be saveable, can I rebuild it myself. its an e4od trans. any help on this would be appreciated
i'd recommend a transmission service. ford recommends them every 30-40k miles on the E4OD. Rebuilds are pricey on automatics. Might wanna check the junkyards for a wrecked 5 speed manual with <100k miles. Clutch replacements are much cheaper than rebuilds.
I was going to do service on the trans (filter, fluid change)... but I talked to the guy i bought the truck from and he said he never changed the fluid, and i've never done it, so it has 226,505 miles on the same fluid... someone should reach out and smack me through my computer screen I know, but the problem is that everyone i talk to says that if i change the fluid and filter now, the trans will burn up in a couple months. something about the trans becoming dependent on the fluid that is in there. I've thought about changing over to a manual also because i prefer manual trans but wasn't sure if it was possible to just change it out or what? I would have to cut a hole in the floor, would the push button four wheel drive work the same? I also went and bought a stupid code reader for the obd 1 codes, don't do it, they suck. and mine won't even flash or make noise or anything, so that leads me to think I have a "no code" problem that needs fixing. I don't know. I'm reaching the end of my rope here quickly
no need for a code reader. I have an 8" or so piece of door bell wire in my center console. I just use that and count the CEL flashes, same conclusion as a reader without the extra cost(unless you don't have any spare wire laying around lol)
i did that first... a bunch of times... and i don't think i'm doing it right. I counted the flashes, but nothing about the trans came up, I would think that since the light was flashing there should be a code. I did that self test four times... and got the same numbers three times, I should have two digit codes in that truck right?
as for changing the trans to a manual i'd think the computer would need reprogrammed unless you can find a truck that's identical to yours besides the trans then you could get ahold of that computer, but they'd prolly charge you as much as the reprogramming would cost. I'm not positive though, i just kno with eec-iv the computers got very sensitive. My eec-iii ranger has never thrown a code ever and it has 123k miles on it. I've got 2 codes on my eec-iv f150 at 37k miles. Blessing and a curse i guess. You know there's a problem, but now you have to fix it lol
my guess is you're getting 332 which is egr valve failing to open, same code i'm dealing with, gonna take my egr off and clean it and everything it connects to, after that i'll move to the solenoid and the sensor. The other is 452 which is Vehicle Speed Sensor. I'm not too keen on that one but it could have something to do with why your trans was kicking out at 50 mph exactly
if it's sending bad signals though, which is what your check engine code is suggesting, it could be triggering some kind of safety mechanism in your computer. i kno when i hit 75 my doors automatically lock, even if they're already locked, so maybe your PSOM is sending bad codes and the truck thinks you're about to lift off the ground so it's popping you out of gear? I have no clue to be honest with you just trying my hardest to help out
I appreciate it man... i'm just sick of banging my head against the wall trying to keep this thing running... i need to park it, tear it apart, then put it back together and be done with it, but its my daily driver now so i can't do that
If this was mine, first I would pull the three digit codes, and post them here. EGR codes will not affect the tranny shifting.
Then I would change the tranny fluid, and filter. I would not flush it, just drain it and the torque converter. I would plan on changing again in a couple of thousand miles.
If you are getting a speed sensor error, it could be causing strange behavior of the tranny, but the E4od has a known problem. Ford calls this "false nuetral". It is cause by the MLPS. This switch is located on the side of the tranny, and tells it what gear it is supposed to be in. If the switch fails, gets water in it, or has a corroded connection, the tranny can shift in and out of nuetral at random. The switch is cheap and easy to change if you can't find a bad connection or damaged wire.
The E4od is not considered a do-it-yourself rebuild. It is one of the more complicated trannys Ford has produced.
Good Luck Frank
