Ok i've had some ideas from my friends about upgrades i should do on my truck, but im not real good with upgradeing parts just replaceing and fixing. I have a 91 f-150 5.0 3spd auto with OD.
First would probably be a camshaft but i don't know what brand is best and what size and all that. Next would be Headers and a dual exhaust, what kind of headers have yall had good experience with?
I don't really care about more power it has enough for me i just want to upgrade alittle. And any ideas would be great i aint got a alot of money lol (typical high school kid) but i can strech some stuff out to help with that.
what kind of money are you looking to spend on this? Then i could give you a better idea on what to do. personally id start with a good tuneup with some better plug wires, plugs, distributor cap and rotor if you havent done that already. almost any headers you get will be better than the stock manifolds, should be plenty of threads in here about what headers people liked/disliked and why. theres countless options for a duel exhaust and it kinda just goes by what you personally like as far as sound. Cam choices are kind of limited by the stock speed density computer unless you convert to MAF. And hey i hear ya about bein a high school kid and not havin a whole lotta money. more than once ive bought parts for my car or truck and then hadda worry bout gas money to get to school lol.
stay away from hooker exhaust systems.....they are not bolt on to my experiance. i have dynomax blackjack headers and they are really nice, they don't hang down too far so you don't ever hit them offroading.
in my opinion the speed density system doesn't let you put a big enough cam in your truck to get any real gains, that's why i pulled mine off for a carb. if you put a cam in your truck it's like 30 more bolts to pull the heads and port them yourself--but you said you don't really need more power so idk--but if you do the cam i would do a mass-air upgrade at the same time so you can run a fatter cam
for the exhaust ditch the cat and don't bother with shortie headers, longtubes are just a little more and are just better headers all around, for the muffler how loud do you want it? REALLY REALLY loud- slp loudmouth mufflers, really loud- glasspacks, loud- flowmaster44s, loud at wide open throttle and mellow when cruising- turbo mufflers
personally i don't like flowmasters but alot of people do
you can make some good power with that 302, i have my 4600lb truck running 14.4 at the track with my 302 (still havn't hit the nitrous yet though (125 shot))
when i was in highschool (been out for two years) i had my truck leveled with stock tires on it shortie headers with the stock y-pipe and a turbo muffler with a 45* turn after the muffler to a chrome pipe coming out the side infront of the back tire, sounded pretty good, had wires and other small crap, senior year i put on my longtubes and 2.5in hooker exhaust with turbo mufflers now sounds a lot better, did the carb swap/cam/distributor/ported heads/other crap thanksgiving break freshman year in college then summertime i put in the 3500 stall converter when my friend switched his mustang to a c4
if you don't feel like pulling the intake manifold and waterpump and timing cover then put on a set of 1.7:1 roller rockers, it'll make your cam seem bigger
It's a 2wd. lol and i wish i could take the cat off but stupid Va emission laws. as for the exhuast i was planning on long tubes, true dual with Cerrybomb glasspacks probably comming out either side. in front of the tire like the one pipe is now (dad didn't want to spend the money to go over the axle Lol) I don't do to much off roading in mine (till i get fresh tires) I wish it could be much louder (dad keeps telling me that it's doesn't need to be rude but need to have class) but the duals will help with that. I thought about converting to mass air but don't know much about the convert. I've done a poor man's tune up, new plugs cap and rotor. this weekend it's new wires cause they aint been changed since the thing was new.
