Swaping out a 300 to a 351 in my 81 f100. Everything looked great until we tried to drop it in today. Something won't fit. I have the new engine mounts for the 351 but I think I may have to change the engine mount bracket (the part that bolts to the frame) it appears I could enlogate the hole about an inch and it would work but then oil pan wont fit. I couldn't see if oilpan was going to fit either it looks close but not sure as motor was never in alingment. I've looked at Lcm (link below)LMC Truck Parts - Page 52
and they mention a motor mount engine braket for the 5.8. I wonder if this is what i need and if it moves the motor back so it fits. Anyone have any experience with this. I'm new to the board because of this project and I will post some picks once I figure out how
Hello, yes you need to switch the engine mount stands, they are different for a 6cyl and a V8. You should be able to get a set from a scrap yard or a donner truck. Once these are changed things should line up for you, Mike
You will have to go to the junkyard and get the frame perches out of a truck that had any v8 in it, and then take your perches out and bolt the others in place. I believe there are some rivets involved, so get out the grinder and or a drill.
I have been searching the site to find help and there is pleanty here. How late of a 150 can I use the perches from? The problem in the midwest is the junk yards are limited to late model vehicles and crush everything else.
With the oil pan, I hope you have a rear sump pan on it. If it came from a car, it will have a front sump pan which won't fit, or it may have a dual sump pan, which barely fits and you can't get to the 2nd drain plug very well.
Its a rear sump but I'm hoping the new perches move the motor back a little as it appears close to the cross frame. Another question comes to mind what about the oil filter. It looked close also, will the new mounts help with this?
Since you have a rear sump pan, the perches will fix it. If you tried to modify what you have to fit, then nothing else would fit right from the fan to the driveshaft. The perches will make it all work out. Look up on a internet store and make sure you have truck motor mounts for that year also.
If you cannot find any with in reason, contact me and maybe I can locate a set here. Shipping would not be bad as the perches wont weigh that much, Mike
2 hours in the rain at the junkyard and $40 later I have my brackets. I took the passenger side of first and then discovered the drivers has big rivets. The guy at the yard dragged out his torch and cut them off for me for nothing, What a deal. Now I see how the V* sit back and the oil filter lands in the hole in the crossmember. It all comes together with a little info. Thanks guys. I'm taping the process of putting the motor in and when done will post it on utube maybe I can save someone so problems that I'm strugglin through.
