Hard To Start

hi guys, I have a 79 F-100 351M 2bbl carb, most of the time the truck starts up fine, but sometimes i have to put the pedal to the floor to start the truck up then it will black smoke for about a min then its fine. does anyone know what could be causing that?

check choke adjustment could be its sticking shut after it starts this might be where your black smoke is coming from.

It could be loading up and flooding.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Either the choke, or it's loading up on you/flooding....
How old are the plugs and wires, cap, rotor...

I will check on that choke for sure, the plugs and wires, cap, rotor is all brand new. if i change over to a 4bbl carb how much more HP will i gain?

Does this happen when you start it hot or cold? If you have to start with the pedal to the floor and then it smokes when it starts, the motor is flooded. That means there is gas in the cylinders before you start it. Are you pumping the pedal a bunch before you start it or something?
