I have a 2004 F-150 with the 5.4 V8. Its a great truck, has 80k on it. Lately it started making this ticking/knocking noise. I first thought it was lifters or a fuel injector, But my mechanic and i determined it was "Variable Cam Timing" we diagnosed it using ALLDATA software and their instructions say to replace the "Cam Phaser"
Anyone else know anything of this situation or more about it? how much does this part cost? easy to change?
First, welcome to the site, there is alot of useful info on here.As for your problem, this is a common problem on the 04-05 models, if you run a search on here you will come up with more info than you can shake a stick at. I can't remember exact prices but if you have a shop do the repair it will be spendy because you'll have alot of time invested in tearing the motor apart. I was told by alot of people that the phaser knock won't hurt anything, so if the noise isn't that bad and you can live with it I wouldn't bother fixing it.
Ya, I've been told by a few people whom i know have this problem, not to worry about it. They said its harmless, but its just always been hard for me to ignore something like that. I'm pretty **** when it comes to taking care of my vehicles so i cringe when i hear that phaser knocking. I will have to chat with my mechanic again and get an estimate. My dad owns the building that he rents from us, so maybe i can get a discount. Haha, or maybe i will just buy a louder stereo to drown out the knock...... Thanks for your advice!

Do the search like fordman7603 says. There was some real good info on this just a couple or three weeks ago. It seems like if you get ahold of this one tool that won't let the timing chain drop it's not a bad job. Your mechanic friend may or may not know about it.
