Question Adding Intermittant Wipers

Been wondering about this for awhile now. I'd like to have delay wipers. Can I
change the switch or do I have to change the wiper motor too?? Prolly a silly question, but I haven't see this one on the boards for days. If I can swap switches, is it plug n play??

You need the correct switch and the black boelectronic controller) that mounts on the inside of the dash. It is a plug and play with these 2 parts. If you're junk yarding parts keep an eye on the late 70's and early 80's vans also, they use the same system.

Yes you can and it is mostly plug and play. You can go to the junk yard and get one for a 79 if you fell lucky or do like I did. I carry a pair of pliers in my pocket to check the switches as most I have seen people take the ***** off to get the dash bezel off. Turn the **** to find off. or use the pliers to turn it. To the right you have low and high. Turn back to off and will it turn to the left? if so you have found want you need. Take the switch out and you will have the switch and a short loom to the black box then the plug. It is the black box it what you need. Take it all as I don't think it comes apart. Look for a mid 80s F150 seems like most of the ones I have seen have intermittent wipers . Pull you switch out and you will notice that is two plugs into the switch. Plug the larger one with 5 or 6 wires into the new plug. If I remember right it will only go in one way. The smaller plug 2 wires (If I remember right) it has the squint pump wire (black with green tracer), plug it in backwards (it will do this) and will work fine. The only difference is that the shaft for the **** will be about 1/4" longer and you can cut it down and grind the flat spot on it or do like I did and just leave it that way. I learned this on this board and I still think it is the coolest thing I ever did to my truck for 3 bucks. I look all the time I go to the yards and yes about 6 months later I found one for a 77 but I still have the 85 one in mine, just put the 77 on the shelf. This will also work on a Jeep CJ with the 4 wire motor.

I took mine from an 89 or 90. Like Gary said, you just need the switch and the black box. The box has 2 pigtails, one plugs into the switch and the other into the truck harness. It really is that easy. The hardest part is mounting the black box. I used a sheet metal screw through the wall above the kick panel, took about a minute. BTW, the switch I got works like this - delay settings to the left, off in the center, and low/high to the right. It took disasembling it for my dumb *** to figure it out.

Delay wipers in my opinion is more important than power steering options. But I always forget to check for this option in the junk yards. Thanks for posting this thread; hopefully I will upgrade my trucks.

The intermittant box will work off many vehicles in my experience. The boxes of early
70's into the late 80's have worked for me. As long as it plugs in it has worked for me.

Good stuff here, I was just thinking about this last week driving the truck it was rain/mist and it was driving me nuts. Enough rain to justify hitting the wipers, just not enough to have them running the full time as the wiper would screech across the windshield.
