engine shut down--front end noise??

engine shut down--front end noise??
I am having two issues that seem to have started about the same time but I'm not sure if they are related. I have a 2003 4x4 EB Expedition with about 104K on it.
The first issue is that it has made some noise in the front end a few times lately that sounds exactly like it does when I go from 2H to A4WD on my 4x4 selector. It makes a bit of a whining noise, then the normal clunk. It seems to only happen when I am holding speed or decelerating, but I cant seem to "make" it happen so I'm not sure.
The second issue is that the engine has completely shut down 2 or 3 times lately while driving. I pull over, put it in park, turn the key off and back on and it restarts not problem. I had this same problem a while back when I had a coil going bad but it had other symptoms like missing, etc when that happened.
Is it possible that these two issues are related? I do not have a CEL light on or anything like that.
