Is there such a thing as an electric brake controler that mounts on the trailer itself? I have a trailer that will be towed by more than one vehicle, thats why I ask. What are some of the pluses and minuses of a trailer mounted or truck mounted controler? Does one work better than the other? By the way it is on a 2000lb trailer that has a capacity of just under 10k, but will normally only carry about 5k, for a total weight of approximatly 7000lb.
Brake controlers are mounted in-cab so you can adjust the sensitiviy or manually activate the trailer brakes. I believe they would cost more if they had to be built to withstand the weather and abuse they would get if they were mounted on the trailer tongue.
For your intended use with different tow vehicles, I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy. It comes with two mounting devices. One is the standard bracket that mounts under-dash. The other is more like a holster that the controler slides into. It's made to slide the controler in and out quickly and easily. (I'm using this mount with a Prodigy.)
You would have to contact [link:www.tekonsha.com|Tekonsha] to find out if you could order additional wire harnesses/plugs and the holster style mounts for the extra vehicles that you intend to tow with.
