Proper way to pull codes

I am trying to read codes on my 89 F350 351w and I am not sure about how to go about doing this. Ive read that you simply jump the two "holes" on the EEC test port, and other places say to ground the one port. I also read the fordfuelinjection site and am even more confused? How should I do this? Also, is it easier to just count the engine light or is there an easier way to do it with a multimeter? Thanks

Forget about the multimeter. If you have found the diagnostic connector you will see the single wire connector. Just ground this. Then switch on the ign. and count the light flashes. Have a sheet of paper and pen to write the numbers down.
If you look at the top line of this forum page you will see "Tech Info". Click on that and then on OBD1 self test and you might get a more understandable version of how to do it.

I really prefer the following site over fordfuelinjection.com, but that's really a personal preference: EEC IV Self Test hookup . Just leave out the voltmeter/test light in the diagrams and watch the check engine light instead. I think that FFI.com makes it too complicated -- just jumper to the handy ground wire in the test port instead of trying to find another ground to attach to. All of the repair manuals say to jumper to the test port; ffi.com is the only place that says to ground the STI wire.

Thanks, thats what my confusion was. I always thought you just jumped the two holes on the EEC port. I never grounded anything outside of the plug itself. Thanks
