Im looking to convert my 67 F600 to four wheel drive. Has anyone ever done this or have any advice? I would love to locate a parts truck that i could just swap things over from...anybody have one??
That's really the best way to go. I've done it the other way, converting a 2-wheel-drive frame and it was a PITA. And I'd do it all differently if I tried it again (which I probably won't!)
There cant be too many of those F600 4x4's around? If you live in a heavy snowfall state, perhaps they were used as plow trucks,or as wildland fire trucks in remote locations, but i cant imagine there exactly common anywhere.
Wait a second...F600? That's what I get for reading too fast! That truck should be leaf spring, straight axle front end...easy to swap in a 4X4 front axle, practically a bolt-in operation. Don't know about the steering but I should imagine it wouldn't too bad to adapt as well.
As far as I know all of the bigger Ford trucks of the era were converted to 4x4 by Marmon-Herrington. Start looking for salvage yards that deal in medium/heavy trucks. If you find a Marmon-Herrington conversion as a parts truck be sure to grab the builders ID plate or at least copy all the info from it. M-H is still very much in business and keeps good records.
Just get a deuce and a half 2 1/2 ton military truck front axle. They are very easy to find. Much easier to find than a Marmon-Herrrington or a Neapco. You can find rebuilt ones from Boyce Equipment and there are alot of other surplus parts suppliers. You aren't building a monster truck but a real truck. Take a look at the currenht issue of Fourwheeler magazine as it has a picture of a '69 F-600 Neapco conversion in it.
