front fender seals

Couple of questions regarding the subject seals. I have not pulled the front clip or fenders off the truck yet.

1. How do you tell if they are bad?

2. Can the seals be replaced without pulling the clip or fenders?

Except for the unknown regarding these seals, I have no reason to pull thew clip or fenders, Thanks for the help.

Pop. May I offer; I don't know why you feel you need to remove the clip, but when you do, you have to line everything back up. Keep it all together is a plus. Making it all fit again is APITA, IMHO.

Now if you are an experienced body man, feel confident that you can handle it, disregard my post.

I can give you an answer. I took my front end apart to blast and clean the radiator support and drivers side inner apron. The passenger side had a big hole under the battery and was thrown out and replaced. You cannot access those seals at the back. They are also set into the fender itself and well glued. I removed mine with a putty knife and then used a disc to clean the area to bare metal since the fenders were blasted on both sides. I can say that the seals were not falling apart when they became exposed. My clip needed to be apart for the inner metal work, the fender body work and then to paint each piece individually before reassembly. One thing I noticed, that unlike my cars, the inner side of the fenders were completely painted the original Holly Green.

These trucks originally were painted quite thoroughly as far as front clip and kick panel areas of the cab go on the outside...parts hidden when its assembled...The rear of fender seal which is glued to the fender on the rear reinforcment brace is of heavy foam rubber...its approx. 3/4" wide by about 1 to 1 1/4" tall...the height is used to seal to the varying contours of the cabs outer kick panel structure. These seals cannot be replaced without removing the fenders for the job to be done properly...cleaning the cab and fender and painting as needed and undercoating if desired. These seals are not glued to the cab when the clip is joined...its just smushed up to the cab and forms the tight seal required.
The fender apron and fender UPPER real seals are just flat rubber strips cut to side and stapled onto the aprons rear flange and screwed to the rear fender area on some trucks...Ive seen trucks where the aprons strip had extra length to cover the rear of the fenders bolting flange at the cab below where the hood hinge is mounted.

Thanks for all of the info. I think I will leave it be. Most of the rubber on the truck is in good shape so I will assume those fender seals are good also. Sounds like it will save a lot of work.
