02 Explorer Paint-ALL NFG???
I have a 2002 Sport Trac, Black in color. The paint has just recently taken on a new characteristic-it looks like diamond plate
. I believe it is heat blistering, but it's -40 here, which confuses me. There are thousands of little "cracks", that look like x's (or +'s, depending on the angle
), that are only on the steel portion of the truck (Cab, Doors, Hood, Fenders). Is there a way to top coat this properly, or am I taking it back down to steel? I am a hobby bodyman, and run a small side business, so it's mostly the work involved that deters me, but I don't want it to show through a top coating. I have been doing body work off and on for over 10 years, mostly for a local body shop, and just started to do things on my own. I was planning on airbrushing some real flames on it anyway, but now it may be a much larger job than I had planned on tackling. Any suggestions? Any other ideas what might be causing the paint to deteriorate?
My opinion is, if you put another coat over what you have, you will have the same texture pattern on the top as you do the bottom. You need to at least make the paint smooth before painting over it again. And if it's moisture under the paint, you could have rust shortly following it.
