Which Thermostat

I'm gonna be towing about a 6500lb fifth wheel with my 77 F350, 460/C6. I have recently replaced the thermostat with a 190 degree, since that is what the book called for. I am now wonderring if the 190 degree is too warm for Southern California towing. Will the 190 cause pinging sooner? Should I go to a 180, or is the 190 fine?

thanks for your help

I don't think a 180 stat will improve your towing since both a 180 and a 190 would be fully open when the engine is under a load like towing. In Michigan, I use a 190 for quicker warm up in the winter to get more out of the heater faster. One of my newer trucks came with a 195 stat to keep the engine warm for better emissions.

Yeah, in So Cal, you Tstat will almost always be fully open when you are driving, so you won't notice a difference unless you get into really cold country. Even then I don't think you will be able to tell between a 180 or 190 or even 195.
Now going to a 160 in cold country can be a mistake. I drove through a snow storm in Yosemite with a 160 in a Datsun and nearly froze to death.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
