i just bought a 1993 ford f-350 with the 7.3 international engine. I was just wondering how to find out whether it is 166 hp or 185 hp because my injector pump is going out and they asked me if i was 166 or 185 hp, or if anybody knows if there is a difference to let me know. thanks
It should be the 185, the the 165 version was an industrial usage. As far as differences I don't know of any, I've never seen a 165 version, but the any IP from a 7.3 will work.
The 165 horsepower motors were in the earlier pickups at least on the data sticker either 185 or 165 will be marked.
Now for the rest of the story I got this from a long time ford service manager back in about 85 wether its true or not I don't know but it is what he belived. when ford made the deal for the int motor gm had destroyed the diesel and they didn't think the pickup would sell near as good as it did. (possible I can see this) Ford sold more units than the original contract with int was for and the 185 version was sold out and they built more with the 165 version just tried to keep it quiet.
The only one that I ever owned 166 version I bought used in wyoming but one of my friends bought a new one in houston so who knows. I do know back then there was a rebuilder in abiline I belive and when you ordered a pump he wanted to know what elevation you were going to be in most of the time.
