[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jul-02 AT 05:06 PM (EST)]I recently picked up an 86 F350 crew cab dually w/a 460/C6 setup and was surprised to find the gear ratio is a 3.55. I am towing a 7500 lb fifth wheel trailer, and find the 3.55 a little sick, but the truck still handles the load OK.
Is it worth the expense to upgrade to the 4.10? Will the 3.55 give me trouble on mountains, and will the 3.55 be hard on the tranny? Empty I get about 7mpg...would 4.10 kill that or not make much of a difference?
Suggestions, comments and observations are appreciated.
I tow a 6,000 lb. Travel trailer with my F350 dually crew cab long box. I have the injected 460, ZF five speed and 4:10's, and in general it pulls the hills very well. I get just under 10 mpg towing (Canadian gallons).
With all that torque there are still some hills in the interior of B.C. that have me down to 3rd gear, so I'd say that the 4:10 gears would be a definite plus for you... It's all a trade off tho, cost of the conversion ballanced against your tolerance for grinding slowly up the worst hills.
