4x4 Question

I recently took my '04 Screw to the dealer because I could not go from 4WH to 2WH while moving (snow) and could not get 4WL to engage while stopped and in neutral. They diagnosed the IWE solenoid and 4W drive motor as shorted out and replaced both. I still can't shift from 4WH to 2WH while moving (wet gravel road test) so I took it back in. They couldn't find anything else wrong and after discussing with Ford hotline they told me that most likely it is because my front tires are worn (approx. 6/32) more than the rear tires and it is causing driveline windup. They said that to disengage from 4WH requires backing up 10 feet or so. This seems to work. Can anyone tell me if that is a correct diagnosis or not or could something else be causing this? I will be replacing the front tires soon but not before my extended warranty runs out in about a week.

Thanks -

it sounds reasonable 6/32 differences is a pretty big differential

I agree. Now if someone could tell me how to get my 73 Jeep J4000 out of 4w high to 2w high I would love it. It is stuck. I can get into 4w low and back to 4w high though.
