Okay, fixin' to start on the tune-up. Drove the truck up to work this morning (grrrr...Saturday work sucks!). Got the fuel to just above 1/4 of a tank, and when I pulled in the driveway, voila...gas smell. I got out immediately and found the evaporator cannister. There was no gas leak that I could see, but as I played with the hose going into it, I could definitely smell the gas from there. Is there something that can be cleaned there, or replaced? I have not tried to take the hose off, or anything else yet. Gonna grab a bite to eat and let the engine cool down some before I start pulling plugs.

I'd love to work a Saturday, that would probably mean we were busy and I got my pay cut back, my son wouldn't be laid off, hell 2/3 of the shop wouldn't be laid off: sounds good to me. Opps, sorry I couldn't help on the evap canister, couldn't help myself.

Man, I know how you feel. Hijack accepted, apology accepted on the canister. Okay, so the plugs went......went. Boy, I know now, start with the back plugs first! Those are sumbitc.....s. The front four went great. I didn't remove the fuel rails, but did loosen them so I could move them a bit out of the way. Still didn't help the back four plugs. Them are sumbitc....s! But I won. Plugs changed, throttle body cleaned, fuel filter will be changed tomorrow. I'm tired. Due to the 8 pack involved in this job, test drive will have to wait until tomorrow!

I also found that this evaporator cannister does indeed contain a filter...a sponge type filter. But I cannot find anyway to open this cannister. For sure no way to reach that filter to clean it. Any ideas??

I have a 5.4 in my E250, I took off the engine cover looked at the fuel rails and stuff, put the cover back on, only had 80,000 miles and it run's great, I was just going to be nice and change the plugs. My V10 i'm sure is the same as your back two plugs on your truck, PITA.
I looked around on the evap canitster, not serviceable from what I can find out. It is supposed to purge itself into the intake manifold somehow, you might try following the hoses and see if one is cracked or pulled off. It collects all the fumes from the gas tank instead of letting them into our pristine air and burn them up when the truck is running.

Oh yeah...sorry about that. There is only one hose...and it is pretty dry rotted. Don't know if just changing that would remedy my problem, but prolly couldn't hurt!

Seems like there should be more than one hose, but at the very least if it's dry rotted that would be a good place to start.

Well, here's what spark plugs look like at 105,000 miles:

Went for my test drive today, and she runs just smooth as silk. It still ran pretty good before, but this is a noticeable difference. I also changed the fuel filter and the PCV valve. I also cleaned the throttle body. And I changed the hose that goes into the evaporative cannister. So we'll wait a bit and see if that got rid of my gas smell. And we'll see what it did for my mileage. Should boost it a bit after looking at those dirty plugs! All in all, not a bad job, but ny knuckles may never forgive me! Man are they messed up.

I hope the new hose fix's the smell, would be an easy fix then. Glad the truck is running like it should.

A couple of things to think about.

1) Verify your check engine light comes on when you first turn the key to ON and before you actually start the engine.

2) You might want to get the PCM read for pending codes just in case.

I read up on a few things, like this:

http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdi...f/obdsm307.pdf

It goes over the OBD stuff for 2003. Lots of weird things it does looking for leaks.

How long do you run (in hours/days/weeks) on a full tank of gas before the smell starts?

Hmmm, more food for thought Art. Never had any problems with the CEL, but I will double check it for the BEFORE start. I have a reader, but don't know if it's good enough to pull any pending codes.

The smell starts after the fuel guage goes below a half a tank, and somewhere just shy of the quarter tank mark. I don't have to drive far...just enough to warm the engine up, though I've never tried to really pin down that aspect.

I'll keep tabs on it as it goes below a half a tank and see what happens. I'll try and remember to pull my reader out tonight and see what it says.

Well, my reader didn't show any codes. All running smooth and normal. Still have a ways to go before we get below 1/4 of a tank.

Okay, just an update on this. I've now run the tank pretty close to a 1/4 of a tank three times now, and thought I had the gas smell once, but not again. I'll keep monitoring that. Maybe the new hose did the trick...it was pretty dry rotted and nasty.

As for the tune-up, before I was probably averaging between 12.5 and 13.5 mpg. I've had the three runs mentioned above (one tank primarily between work and home...about 35 miles of mostly highway with a little traffic). One tank to San Antonio, and one tank on the return trip to Houston. All three tanks I got 14.5 mpg (hand calulated only...I have no mpg 'puter in the truck). I drive 65mph to work and back, except for any traffic encountered, and the trip to and from San Antonio was 65 mph until I got outside of Houston and/or San Antonio on I-10. Then it was 70mph. San Antonio included quite a bit of "city driving". So all in all, I picked up 1 mpg with the tune up. Hey, with 105,000 miles...I'll take it! And it runs just as smooth as the day I bought it. Next up...tires!

Just because this one was brought up again...as a follow-up on the gas smell. I have not had the gas smell since I completed all these tune-up items. Every now and then I think I do, but it could just be exhaust fumes, or something else. It hasn't done it at all like it was before I did all this stuff. Truck runs great. Woo Hoo!
