Angry cranking slow

ok i know that this has been posted time and time again and i tried not to post this thread but here it is
bought my first diesel 4 mouths ago
'89 f250 7.3 5 speed 4x4 super cab
since i bought it it has had problems with the starter cranking slow
here is the list of what has been tested and replaced
new glo-plug controller
all glo-plugs tested ok
rebuilt starter
new battery's
new neg battery cables(pos not replaced yet)
the truck does start i just want it to start easier
it cranks slow like if the batteries are dying but the speed is consistant and is a little faster when the glo-plugs turn off
any ideas appreciated
i love the truck but this is getting irritating

dishman5000,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Positive battery cable near the passenger side battery terminal.

Does the wire insulation look swollen?
Does it look like it has been hot?
Brittle and discolored?

Three wires join inside the passenger side battery clamp.
Corrosion gets inside the clamp and does it's thing.

You can't see the corrosion from the outside.

The only other thing could be what size batteries?
850 CCA is the minimum.

Thumbs down cranking slow and now ip fuel leak

went through everything again
even tried a new pos. cable
same thing cranks slow
batteries are brand new 850 cca / 1000ca
all cables are new now
unless something is still wrong with the starter???
and now i have a fuel leak that looks like it is come from the bottom of the injector pump
fuel is running from bottom of ip across the vallypan and down the back of the engine but it is not all of the time some times there are drips under the truck other times it is dry
i hope this doesn't mean my ip is going
so now i have 2 problems
on the the bright side the truck does start and i can still drive

You are not supposed to crank the engine until the gp,s click off they are pulling a lot of amps. crank the engine over as soon as the gp's click off before they can cool down but not while they are heating.

i know not to crank the motor until the light goes off
i think i may have actually found my problem
my starter that was in the truck, that i had rebuilt is a direct drive starter, i was reading a tech article on the oilburners site and it was specifying a gear reduction starter i also checked the auto zone and advanced auto parts sites and the both specify a gear reduction starter
i am now assuming that my truck has had the wrong starter from the start (no pun intended)

OK I was going by when you said the speed was consistant and even sped up when the gp's clicked off.

Either starter should work I have enterchanged them but like the gear reduction better.

i'm assuming the cranking speed is faster with the reduction starter
my dad has a '93 and his cranks a lot faster then my '89 does
but i haven't looked at under his truck to see what starter he has

I don't think the speed is any faster if both are in good shape and all other factors are the same. It just seems to me like the gear reduction ones last longer.

I replaced the direct drive starter in my 87, with a nippondenso gear reduction unit. The difference was like night and day! I would recommend against direct drive any day!

hey is there a different starter for the zf 5 or is it the same as the automatic
the reason i ask is before i had the current starter the starter guy had given a starter off the shelf but the gear that engages the flywheel was did not come out far enof to engage my flywheel, hence rebuild the original starter
any on ever heard of this????

Same starter.

Stock you could find a Nippondenso gear reduction, Mitsubishi gear reduction or Delco direct drive starter.

I just swapped out my auto, for a ZF 5. Same starter worked on both flywheels!

Mitsubishi Gear reduction

I have been running that starter for about 8 years or more.
