Horses with an Explorer???

Just wondering if anyone has tried pulling horses with an Explorer? I have a 99 and was thinking of pulling a two horse trailer around with it. Or should I get my 77 F150 out of the pasture to pull it with? Any thoughts? Thanks

Horses with an Explorer???

I was behind the Explorer that lost control and barrel rolled while towing a 12' or so U-Haul on I-75S in Atlanta a few years ago. Furniture exploded everywhere. He was OK, but the Explorer and trailer were gone.

He was just driving along and did a little bit of a late lane change to try and pick up I85, I've made worse moves just avoiding being cut off. In my opinion it should have handled it. There was never even and oscilation, it just rolled.

I've never been a fan of the Explorer... but now I know I'll never suggest anyone tow anything with one.

To be fair, I've not checked out the new Explorer.

Horses with an Explorer???

I have no problems pulling my 14' trailer w/ my Bronco2 on it(5500 pounds). I am not a speed demon with it back there and steep grades take alittle longer than without the trailer, but with the electric brakes on the trailer I have never had a control problem either. I did add a set of add-a-leafs to the rear and that helps the sagging.

If the trailer and horses weight rating are within the load limits of your particular Explorer (i.e trailer tow package or not), you should be allright. Some people encounter problems when the pivot point on the trailer is longer than the wheelbase of the tow vehicle.
I have towed max limits with a 2002 Explorer and was actually impressed with it's ability to handle the load.
The guy that flipped his rig in Atlanta sounds like nature thinned the herd.

Yea, I guess I should of added that I have a '99 XLT 4x4 with the factory tow package (L/S rear, 3.73 gearing and aux tranny cooler). When I went to my dealer, they said with my engine(SOHC) and the tow package, that the max was 6,000. While I was getting my electric brakes wired on the Explorer, the trailer store looked up my year and model(safty resons) and it was listed as 5,986 max. Like I said I'm not a speed demon with the trailer on, but the Explorer handles it well... I was plesantly surprised the first time I took it on a trip.

Thanks for the info. I dont intend to pull it too far. The mountains where we ride are only a short distance away. I dont have the factory towing package so I intend on putting a hitch and a tranny cooler on it.

I have a 93 2wd and pulled an older 12' hoilday trailer with it 160kms round trip "ONCE" I then determined that the only thing it will pull again is "NOTHING".
I wouldn't even consider pulling 2 horses. Don't care what FORD says it can pull I won't do it again.

The flipped rig in Atlanta... I don't think it was nature thinning... it was a poorly designed SUV. I watched it happen right in front of me and have no idea how to explain it... the sudden lane change was not that significant, it should have easily forgiven it.

Now... like I said, I drove an Explorer one time on a long trip and was never so happy to get out of something in my life. I will never set foot in another one of those things ( haven't tried the redesign ) I don't know how anyone could be comfortable in one.

Strong opinion I know... but the Explorer feels unstable and dangerous to me, I wouldn't even let my wife have one.
