E4OD code 29

O/d light started blinking the other day so took truck to tranny shop to get code read it was code 29 a Vss sensor. But could it also be a tach sensor because it seems to be acting weird when the truck is cold. Also where is the tach sensor located. Are the sensors ford only parts or can i buy them at a parts store? Any more info about code 29 would be great. Tranny is rebuilt.

The sensor is next to the oil fill neck, a large nut with 2 wires coming out of it. It is a Ford only part, about $50+.

How is the speedo working?

Both the speedo and tach must be working for the E4OD to shift right.

code 29 is only for vss 14 is the tach sensor
it could also have a bad PSOM if the speedometer always reads correctly

PSOM , programmable speedometer odometer module 92 and later had these
no speedometer cable
the vss sensor sends its signal to the abs module and the psom the psom then sends a speed signal to the processor
if the abs has no light or codes and the speedometer always works fine then it probably has a PSOM issue
you should also unplug the crusie control servo it can also kill the vss signal from the psom to the processor if it is shorting out internally

Cruise control does work and the abs light only truns on for a second when the truck starts. So can this still be a psmo problem. Also where is the PSMO located.

Thanks for all the info.

similar issues

I'm having some of the same issues and will be following this thread closely. My 92 f250 7.3 idi has the E4od and the OD light keeps blinking. The tach works after everything gets warmed up, the speedo works fine and the cruise control don't do nuttin. She shifts pretty smooth and at all the right times. I'm an idiot and didn't think there were any computers in my truck, that's one of the reasons I bought it.

Today I checked the tach sensor wires they were exposed and touching each other. So could this be part of the problem with my tach not working properlly when cold? and if so should i just wrap some electrical tape around the wires. They are plugged in to the sensor but there is some exposed wire touching each other.

srqdiesel shef. is you cruise control working or not. If it is not this could help you narrow down what is wrong.

the PSOM is the instrument cluster itself
you might get lucky and insulating the wires may fix the tach issue

I'm not sure exactly what it means when your cruise control does not work, but when i took my truck to a tranny shop the guy did ask if mine was working, because it can correlate with the tranny and why it is not working. Start a new post and tell them your problems and I'm sure some one that knows way more than me will respond.
