Well I ran into a huge snow-melt mud patch in a field this weekend and needed to use 4 wheel drive.
Got out and locked the manual hubs and when I pulled the lever inside I heard a "Ker-whunk" sound. I chocked it up to the normal sounds and went on out into field.
Needless to say i had no 4x4 and got stuck. Later that same weekend I also had to dig out of a snow-bank with no 4x4.
Big diesels wont push themselves down-hill in ice or mud without weight in the back and/or 4wheel drive.
Any ideas on what that sound was and what I should look for?
I assume I broke something in the transfer case.
With the hubs locked, and the transfer case in 4x2 (2-wheel drive), try to turn the front driveshaft by hand. If it won't move, then the hubs are working.
Then, unlock the hubs, and test again, driveshaft should spin.
Then, put transfer case in 4x4 and see if front driveshaft spins.
ALSO - check 4LOW. If the driveshaft still spins even in 4LOW, that's pretty bad.
