I've got a '99 F-150 XLT w/5.4 V8 and Auto trani - bought it used a year ago. Its got what looks like to me the factory-option hitch package but I'm not sure of this. I'm looking into doing some light towing with a rented trailer and wanted to see if someone could go over what the vital info to know is on my hitch set up so I can purchase hitch accessories, rent the trailer, and know what my limitations are - like hitch class and weight information, radiator info, etc. Whats important to know and where can I find that information about my truck's set-up? Thanks.
The information you're looking for is in the owner's manual.
If you don't have the owner's manual, post back with this information and perhaps someone can help:
GVWR: (located in driver's doorsill)
Axle ratio: (Look for a tag on the differential with numbers like 3.55. If none, look for code in driver's doorsill under 'axle'. It will have to be decoded.)
Wheelebase: (If you're not sure, give the cab configuration and bed size, long or short.)
4x2 or 4x4?
For your hitch, if it has a 2" receiver bolted up under the frame, it should be at least a class III. You may be able to confirm this by looking for any stampings or decals listing the class or weight rating.
if you dont have the owners manual, just remember that ford sets the maximum towing weight for the F150 at 5000lbs. this does not mean you can tow that much all the time though, so check the gcvwr and see what it is for your vehicle. it should be listed on a sticker either on one of the doors or in the glove box. check with a u-haul dealer if you need help finding it.
