Possible vapor lock?
I have a stock 82 F100 with a 3 speed w/ OD SROD tranny. I have about 230000 miles on the truck and it has only had one other driver other than me (my grandfather who only drove the truck on long trips and never over loaded the truck). I'm now running 32" tires. About 6 months ago I did the 1bbl to 4bbl switch over. I took off all the emissions (ie. smog and what not). I had the tranny rebuilt, changed all the gaskets (minus head gaskets), put on the split exhaust manifolds and ran dual exhaust with no cats and tube mufflers on a 2.5" pipe out the sides. I changed all the spark plugs and basically did a complete change over. When I changed the thermostat I put in a 180 C thermostat. I still have a stock fuel pump on the block.
Everything went well for about 6 months and then I loaded the truck up to move and pulled a VW Karmann Ghia (1800 lbs) behind the truck. During the trip I blew a fuel line and began to get what I can only think is vapor lock. I live in Savannah, GA and drove from lower AL during the middle of February so not overly hot.
Now when ever I drive for more than say 30 minutes and then try to get above 55 mph the truck seems like it is running out of fuel. I can only image this to be vapor lock. The fuel line from the pump to the carb runs over the valve cover (not touching) and behind the upper radiator hose (not touching). Its a 3/8" rubber hose.
If I install an inline electric fuel pump and bypass the stock fuel pump do you think this will fix the problem or has anyone ever encountered this problem and what did you do to fix it?
Good luck
