ok, so, my 79 runs fine when I'm driving it easy, and it idles fine. But, when I get on it, it runs out of fuel and the fuel filter is emty. when I start it back up and rev it, it looks like a mix of fuel and air blowing through the filter. The oil dipstick doesnt smell like fuel or anything (mechanical pump) so what I'm figuring, is that it has a pin hole somewhere or a crack in a rubber line somewhere, small enough to keep fuel from leaking, but enough to suck air through under negative pressure.
Any other suggestions?
also, I was talking to a friend last night and he said to just run rubber lines till I can get time to put steele tubing in, at least to be able to drive it for now. Is this a terrible idea?
I'd check starting with the tank. Inspect fuel filler hose/vent hose. Then inspect the rubber hose from the sending unit to the steel fuel line. Oftentimes, people don't check this. I always find rotted hoses on this section.
Then inspect the steel lines going to the fuel pump. Use a strong flashlight and a small inspection mirror.
also, my fuel gage doesnt work, any ideas where to start troubleshooting this one? lol
Electrical portion:
Remove sending unit plug from the tank. Short the plug out with a paper clip. Turn ignition to RUN. The fuel gage should peg FULL. If it doesn't, check wire and ground. Then check the voltage. It should pluse 5 volts.
If it works, you probably have a bad float. Ford is famous for this. They use a two-piece brass float soldered together. Over time, it either cracks or the solder gives in, letting fuel get in and sink to the bottom permanently. You have to drop the tank in order to replace the float. While you have the tank out, inspect the sending unit's filter sock. Clean or replace. Clean out tank if needed. Also, test the sending unit. It should show 10-70 ohms.
Does the fuel pump look wet at all? Sometimes when they start to go, they leak fuel out of the weep hole. It sounds like it can't keep up at high RPMs.
