hello everyone. im hoping i can get yall to answer a question for me. its about the timing cover seal on a 68 model 302. dummy me didnt pay attention which direction the old one came out so not sure how to install the new one. if the timing cover is laying face down so that im looking at the back side of it which way do i install the seal. i dont know the terminology but the seal has what i call the small lip side and the big lip side. im thinking the small lip side goes in first so that you can tap the big lip side. oh the big lip side is the side with the part number on it. thanks ford guys, tom
If you were to look at a side profile view of the seal it is in the shape of a U, the bottom of the U would face to the outside of the timing cover towards the balancer on the engine. If you look at the rubber portion of the seal there is a spring wrapped around the rubber to help hold pressure on the seal against the crankshaft, that will be facing the inside of the timing cover . I fill that part of the seal in with grease, that way when you pound the seal into the cover with a hammer it will not "pop" that spring out. I also put some blue loc-tite (which I think is number 242, but don't quote me on that) around the outside of the seal to help seal it to the timing cover. It is not required, but every seal like this, weather it be on timing covers, axles, ect.... I use the loc-tite and I have never had a seal like that leak.
If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask and good luck with your project!
thankyou very much. but im gonna tear it apart again. see i bought a used cam. supposed to be for a 289/302. its a isky 280 cam. i used the old lifters, the timing gears were lines up correctly, i got fire, gas, but she wont crank. ran fine till i put in the used cam. anyways im just gonna get a new one this time. thanks again.
You're using a used cam from elsewhere with the old lifters already in the engine with wear patterns from another cam, old springs I assume with an unknown lift and required spring pressure due to the replacement cam. Assuming it is a 289-302 cam and the engine does fire up this could be interesting in exactly how long this engine will run...
