my truck wasnt starting with the key anymore, so i had to pop the hood and touch the ends of the solenoid together with a screwdriver to start it. i figured i needed a new solenoid. i put a new solenoid in and of course, the problem didnt stop. the truck does the same thing and i still have to touch the ends of the brand new solenoid together for it to start. what could cause this? i dont think it is the starter, because why would the starter still work when i touch the ends of the solenoid? could it be a fuse? i checked all the fuses in the box under the hood and none of them were bad, but i havent checked the fuses that are inside the cab. where is the fuse for the solenoid? all help is appreciated!! -thanks
it is a 1992 f150 with a 5spd manual. i checked every connection i could see and made no progress. also, when i turn the key i hear the fuel pump turning on and buzzing, and i also hear a slight click, as if the solenoid was clicking, but i dont think it is coming from the solenoid. maybe the starter is clicking? i am at a loss here.
Have you checked the electrical portion of the ignition switch way down on the steering column?
I've heard these can come out of adjustment or the actuating rod fail.
There are a couple of reasons that this can happen. It can be the neutral saftey switch just behind the clutch pedal which is real common or it can be the ignition switch located on the top of the steering column under the dash. Drop the 2 bolts holding up the steering column and follow the rod on top to the large white switch that has two 7/16 bolts holding it on. It will have a large electrical connection that plugs into it. You will also see that the switch can slide up or down to make the starter engage. Be careful with this adjustment or you will wind up with a stuck starter that won't disengage.
