anyone have 4.6 3v

I'm looking at an '09 supercab xlt 4x4 with 3v 4.6, auto, 18" wheels, and 3.55's. How do you guys think this setup would be? It would be my wife's truck and would see little if any towing, but it will end up being mine down the road, so I don't want a total pooch. I haven't had a 4.6 since my '97 and ford has upped the power since, but that truck was a regular cab and was a heck of a lot lighter than these new ones.

I haven't driven a 4.6 3v, but here are some things to keep in mind. The 4.6 3v has more horsepower and about the same torque that a 5.4 had in 1997. (4.6 3v: 292hp/320tq, 1997 5.4: 235hp/330tq) Also, the new 6 speed makes the truck feel a lot more powerful than the 4 speed did.

That being said, go drive one for yourself, and you be the judge. You and your wife will be the ones making the payment.

My truck is a supercab 4x4 with the 4.6l 3v and the 3.55 ratio, But it has 17" wheels. I love it, it still has tons of power. It is by no means a pooch.

My 04 has the 4.6l 2v and for a truck it has enough power. BUT I certainly couldn't beat anything in a drag race. That being said, it's a F150 not a Mustang.

I have this engine in an 09 SuperCrew. It'll definitely move with anything more than the lightest touch on the pedal. I shoot for the that though and I'm averaging 19.7 with 30% city/70% highway driving.

That's quite impressive. I have the 4.6L with the 3.73 axle in a 2004 Expy and I'm very happy with it. Not fast but very economical on the hwy. I would well imagine t hat the 4.6 3V will be a beast. I'm disappointed that it's going away soon.

With mine I was getting around 14-16 during the break in period. My last tank was around 16 mpg. But that was with alot of off raod miles, alot of that was running in 4 high.

5.4 here

i bought the 09 XLT 4x4 with the 5.4 and 355 limited slip gearing, oodles of power, great gas milage too, 18.5 mpg so far. it seems to get better as time goes on. mine is a regularcab 4x4. love it. drove the 2 valve 4.6, hated that one, never drove the 4.6 3 valve but with the numbers being close to a 5.4 i decided to just get the 5.4.

Welcome to FTE. Through my new vehicle purchases over the years, I have never even looked at the MPG readout till over 1500 miles minimum. Anything else will just scare you silly, since she is still breaking in.
