I have a 93 f-150 with a 300 5 spd. the connecting rod blew apart in cyl 5 and trashed the cylinder. I am looking for a new block for a re-build my question is will a carb"d block work? i know the heads wont cross over but is that the only difference?
The carbed blocs had a boss on the left side for a z-bar pivot for the mech clutch, so you can easily go from carb to efi but not the other way around. The fuel pump is different as mentioned and if I remember correctly there are more bosses on the efi heads to bolt the exhaust manifolds to than on a carbed head.
BUT, the EFI head does fit the carbed block and that has nothing to do with the clutch pivot. The fuel pump mount hole on the EFI is cast closed but the mounting holes are there and one only needs to drill/knock out the plug and the mechanical fuel pump will mount or one can use an electric pump...it's been done both ways.
A pre-EFI block also may not have the mounting points for the various other gizmoz that go with EFI. I think that the biggie would be the knock sensor.
I'm pretty sure that a pre-EFI block has been used with EFI, if not on this forum then the ford six site. If anything, I would recomend getting an '80+ block (if possible) as it would have more mounting pads than the earlier blocks. With some redneck ingenuety, however, I'm sure you'll do ok.
