Oil leak help

I drove my truck to work last month when I got back home I smelled oil I looked under the hood and found oil pooled in the intake manifold creases; today I started it up and think I found where its coming from. It appears to be the passenger side where the head & block is bolted together; question would a blown head gasket cause this other than the present of oil engine starts and runs great. Its a 1971 302 2V w/dura spark ignition other that its stock.
Thanks in advance

I can't answer the question for your specific engine but I do know that a bad head gasket can leak oil and the engine will run normally.

My wife had a DOHC 4-cyl in her Neon. The block was cast iron and the head aluminum. The factory used the wrong type head gasket causing oil to leak between the head/block and run down the back of the engine. The factory would not warrant the work but did come up with a new head gasket material. She continued to drive it and I had to put in oil every week.

It wasn't worth my time to repair so I eventually donated the car.

almost seems like valve cover gaskets. intake would be mounted to head above block.

That's right! The mounting surface between the intake manifold and head is diagonal and the top of the manifold is inches above the head gasket. Plus, and correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no oil flow into the intake manifold from the head, just from the block to the head, and back.

There is oil flowing beneith the intake manifold in the valley. So in order for that much oil to be coming up from the engine itself, the intake manifold would have to be cracked both top and bottom and the vacuum would suck the oil in not push it out.

So, about the only possibility you have is that your O ring sealing off your distributor is blown; your upper timing chain cover or front intake manifold gasket is blown and the oil is blowing up on top of the manifold; you have cracked your head where the intake manifild bolts to it; or, your valve covers are leaking. I'll give you a 85% chance it's the valve cover gaskets.

Here's a couple pictures to show you the set up:

Of course, these are of a real engine and not a baby pony motor but the configuration is the same.

(just kidding)

if that is not it check your air cleaner. Look inside if you have the PCV system you will see a foam pad if its soaked with oil replace the pad and the PCV. I have seen a PCV Valve go bad and cause oil to get under pressure and get force fed back to the filter in the air cleaner housing. Could be leaking from that too.
