how to add power to a 460 or should i go with a 351
#16
ive considered a 393 stroker but all the money and time involved is just more than id want. Although the truck will occasionally get the speedo pegged i think the 460 is what i want and im sure it would be no slouch on the highway. I was going to start with the headers and y pipe from summit with my own custom exhaust and they have one computer controlled compatible cam i might swap in as well. This would be a daily driver for the most part, and ive heard mixed reviews about a 393 or 408 daily driver.

you CAN get a 460 to rev. go to www.460ford.com and look up some builds they did you can get 800hp EASY in a 460......but to do that you have to go with a carb basically, it's a lot cheaper to go with a carb when you are in the 800hp range IMHO but i didn't read the whole thread since i am on my lunch hour so i'm not sure how much power you want or anything
but stick with a 460 it has a lot more potential than a 351
also pick up a copy of national dragster and you will find parts cheap in the classifieds

heres a good basic HP chart for 460's, it's only for carbed motors though

damn, 0-60 in 6 seconds thats quick. If i could get it going that fast it would probably eat mustangs up until about 80mph. (in the back of my head i always want to be faster than my buddy in his 2004 mustang) i dont want a carbureted 460 thats the reason ive been staying away from pre 87 trucks. As far as the dream power i want if i could add about 100hp and tq to the truck id be happy as hell as it would be good offroad, towing, and maybe even beat out that 04 stang. Ill check out that website as well, ive looked at a few big block ford sites and most of them seem to be carbed but im really wanting to stay with efi and i know it will cost more to go wilder but i wont get too wild with it until maybe in the future when my finances would allow a crazy build. If i recall baseline numbers for the 460 were around 260hp and 385 tq. if i could get around 350hp and 450-500 tq id be happy as hell.

My Chiltons says the '95+ 460 was rated 245hp@4000 and 400tq@2200 versus 230hp@3600 and 390tq@2200 for the previous years, possibly a cam change but I can't confirm. The stock 24lb injectors are technically capable of supplying 350hp at 90% duty cycle so all you really need to do is let her breath, a custom ground EFI friendly cam with mid 260 deg duration and about 0.500" lift would probably do it.

well conanski the only computer compatible cam i was able to find was a comp cams 34-255-55 which has an advertised duration of 256/268 and a .490/.495 lift. How does that cam sound? Would you expect that plus a good set of headers and a full custom exhaust could really put it near 350hp? or what hp would you expect that to be close to? i would be kind of surprised if it got to 350hp with just headers, exhaust and cam but i suppose its possible. i really wish i had a desktop dyno to figure this stuff out

my 94 250 with the 460 is pretty peppy!!! all i have really done to it is gone true duels with 40 series flowmasters and better plugs and wires k&N filter.... and other than past the speed of 70 it pretty much keeps up with my 04 turbo 6.0 deisel.....i haul just about anything with the 460....i have a 5 speed and honestly ,,,,the truck sounds freakin great,,,,runs smooth idles great and gets up and goes with the best of them....werte talkin about work trucks here rite? i mean in my opinion a 460 in a 4x4 even just slightly modified will pretty much do whatever you ask of it and do it without trying very hard....go with the 460 trust me you will love it and its a good thing you dont care much for fuel millage lol cause once you put that 460 in stop counting and just keep fillin it up lol

256 duration will needlessly bias the powerband to low rpms with a 460, peak HP will suffer and that's why I suggested mid to high 260ish duration, you'll get more ponys and still loads of TQ. A custom cam is a good option when there isn't much to pick from over the counter, and it's really not that expensive. A 5.8 can make close to 300hp with nothing but a cam and exhaust so I see no reason the big block could not hit 350 horse with similar mods, the heads are a lot bigger.

Stick a Vortech supercharger on it and drive it. Had a new '96 F350/460/e4od DRW supercab, bolted a huffer on it and LOVED IT! 5# of boost and it would run 15.8's at the track. It nipped the heels of Lightnings back in the day. Not bad for a BIG truck.
It was my daily driver and used it to pull my 40ft race trailer to the track every weekend. NO problem. Man...do I miss that truck!

the supercharger would be my dream, ive seen the ones on vortech's website like the one you have just a little out of reach for me to spend 4-5 grand on the whole setup unless you happened to keep yours and youd sell it cheap lol. Alot of people are saying ill like the 460 more and im pretty stuck on going with it. I suppose ill have to look around and see who will custom grind a cam around here.
