Fried Wheel Bearings???

Hey guys, needs some advice. Wife's got a 2004 f-150 4x4 5.4L with 60,000 miles. On the way home, she was feeling a lot of extra friction when letting off the gas, i.e. the truck almost felt like it was braking when coasting. When she got home tonight the smell of burnt rubber was coming from the front of the truck and I felt the front, drivers side wheel/rim and it was hot compared with all the other wheels. I could feel heat coming off this one wheel...

I'm thinking the wheel bearings are fried...We do have an extended warranty on the truck. Has anyone had problems like this before? How much other stuff could this have screwed up? I guess I ought to take it in to the shop...I've done this type of work on my 73 but I'm afraid to mess with new rigs...Thanks for any input

Could be a seized brake caliper as well.

Hopefully either way it did not get other parts too hot.
If its just a wheel brg or brake caliper ( and now toasted pads if it is) its really not a big deal.

Be careful driving it into the dealer.

I hope your extended warranty covers it, I think they tend to exempt items like brakes most of the time.

kind of doubt it is a wheel bearing.

got to agree with Saleenguy. sounds alot like a brake stuck...which sucks, because now that everything got overheated, you need to replace it all

After thinking about it and taking a closer look this morning, I definitely agree with you guys about the stuck brake... I'm a little worried by what you said tylus that I've gotta replace it all....are we talking pads/rotors/caliper/piston/hub....holly damn this might be really pricey?

I've got the United Car Care,Inc Platinum Coverage for my extended warranty, I'm sure hoping they'll cover this. I'll call them monday and let you know how it goes...

Its definitely a seized caliper like you guys were saying...made some calls and it is covered by the warranty so no biggie. Thanks for the help guys! Cheers!

you need to get your wheel bearing replaced...and the brake pads...maybe even the rotor if it got warped. Reason I say the wheel brg is because of all the heat. They are designed for some heat, but a stuck caliper can cause alot of heat

as for the brake pads, I'd go ahead and do all 4 corners. Let them repair that one caliper/brake under warranty, then go an replace the other 3...just cheap insurance, and it never hurts to have new brakes
