Ok,here we go again,but....I need to unhook the tailgate door sensor on my "01 'cuz living up here in the dry corner of the west it seems as if every time I open and close the door after it's been raining the lites stay on..I can't find any sign of the door ajar wiring in the book.. Has anyone done this??????
Yes, but it's pretty easy to fix the problem and still have your lights work.
Remove handle inside the liftgate, pull the trim off, remove the three latch bolts on each side with a torx. Now you will be able to manipulate the latch and get to the switches. Turn the switches a quarter turn to remove. Clean them up. First with electrical cleaner(which evaporates) make sure they operate, the nubs on the end depress. If the nubs stay stuck the lights will stay on. I used graphite which is a dry lubricant, so it would not attract and retain dust.
Then wrap the switches with electrcal tape to keep the dust out. You'll be able to tell where to wrap. I did this and it has lasted for about two years. I went through what your going through for a long time with much frustration. Those dirt roads are what's doing to us.
Yeah but, I think mine is a more permanant fix for Xs that live in dry areas. We get a lot of dust in all kinds of nooks and crannies. Now I don't know if my way is a permanant fix or not. What I do know is that I sprayed mine with WD40 untill they would not respond to that treatment anymore. It's been two years since I've had to deal with them. I had the same problem from 1997-2000 on an F150. Then from 2000-2002 on my first X. I'm hoping I'm done with it.
