I have a 93 Ford Bronco 4x4 with a 5.8 v8 with 178,000 miles on it. I just purchased this vehicle and not sure where to start. I have been getting a bad noise in the front when the vehicle starts moving all most like gears rubbing but the noise will go away after getting up to 40mph. I also get a bad vibration sometimes while driving (feels like the transmission) but if I let off on the gas and then accelerate again it will go away. Where do I start?
What'd the mechanic say when you got it inspected prior to purchase?
Where to start begins with there the problem is stemming from. No sense to start at the transmission if it's a bad axle. No sense in fixing the axle if it's a control arm. No sense in replacing a control arm if it's the transmission mount. No sense in replacing a transmission mount if it's just a cupped tire. But what if that tire isn't cupped, but just out of balance? See where I'm getting at?
My best recommendation is to take it to a REPUTABLE mechanic, and pay the $90 to have him do a thorough inspection (I think the guys here do a 120 point inspection, though it may vary), assuming that it wasn't done already, and if it were, take it back and have the dealership reimburst you outside of court.

He never said that it was bought from a dealer. :P
And as he has said, unless you take it to get inspected, or you give us a little more detail on the problem its hard to diagnose.
As much as I hate to say that. I'm sure some other people on the forums will post some helpful information. I know I hate to hear "Pay to get it fixed or figure out why its not working".
I looked at the Bronco when I first bought it and the body is perfect! (No rust, good paint, no dents,) That was the most important factor in the Bronco. The engine is mechanically fine. I was just asking for advise on things to look for in the drive train. This is my first 4x4 vehicle that I've owned. I had a couple mustangs that I worked on and modified but I'm new to the 4x4 world. Thanks for any info.
Check and make sure both axles are full of gear oil, I blew a seal in my F100 once and didn't know that it had been leaking gear oil for a few months and then one night coming home it started to vibrate and sound like a chain fall bein pulled at high speed. By my calc it only had a pint or so left in it. Filled er up and the noise went away and so did the vibrations
Agreeing to what everyone else has said just jack the truck up and start jerking on everything as hard as you can and see what all has play in it.
so have you crawled under it to see if anything has play in it yet? pull your hubs out and check to make sure they are working right they can grind sometimes, check to make sure your brake pads arn't rattling in the calipers

I have not crawled under there yet because I've been working like crazy but I'm going to change all the fluids in the diffs and trans and start grabbing the drive shafts to check for anything loose. I pushed the 4x4 button in drive doing 15 mph and I felt the hubs lock so I think they are working fine. I will let you all know what I fine.
I was under the truck today and the front drive shaft to the front axle has about 1 inch in play back and forth. I'm thinking that's real bad since the back one is solid! Now what?
hahahahaha the one in the back is solid because the truck was in park right? lol that means the driveshaft is holding the truck from moving, try putting the truck in neutral then jacking up the rear and seeing how much play it has even if your u-joints are shot to hell with the truck in park you would never know it

opps! LOLLLL!!!!! OK I'll check it again! The front was on the ground too. It's a 4x4 who needs a jack!
